It's an expanded plastic material called EcoWeb, Bert. http://www.firstrays.com/ecowe... Made from recycled plastic.

I've been trying it for a year or so, and it seems to work for all the plants I've put in it. My issue is adequate drainage, given our wonderful generous rains in the summer, so this light, airy stuff acts a lot like tree fern but dries more quickly.
