RavenCroft: If you let a few plants of dill go to seed (not a difficult thing to do!), you will have so many volunteer seedlings the next year, you will never again have to plant it.
General note: I'm surprised that birds eat swallowtail caterpillars! Mine always defend themselves with their "stinkhorns", little concealed yellow forked prongs that emerge from the caterpillar head when disturbed and emit a strong smell to drive away any predators. You can get a free demo from your caterpillars by gently touching their heads. They are usually quick to respond. You'll smell it quickly, too.
