There is the Huntington Gardens in San Marino (northeast of L.A.), and the San Diego Botanic Garden in (I think) Encinitas (just north of San Diego). If you like architecture along with your plants, check out Balboa Park in San Diego. It is free to go inside the park and explore the grounds. There is a fee for the Japanese Garden and most of the museums and the zoo.
