I agree with the others that it would help narrow down what that shrub might be if we knew the part of the country/world where you live. Also if you can give any additional information about the plant, for instance the time of year it usually blooms, color and estimated size of the flowers and does it lose it's leaves in winter?

I think your neighborhood plant journal is a great idea and it's wonderful idea also to get your 4 year old interested in plants and flowers at such an early age! Again, Welcome!
