Planting them early is important for onions. As soon as the ground can be worked, put them in so they have time to make lots of leaves. It's my understanding that more leaf = larger onions. Each layer in the onion is attached to one of those leaves. They grow tops until the days start to get shorter, then the bulb increases in size. Mine are already coming up. I use the term leaves for the green tops as that is where the photosynthesis takes place. Is there another name?
