There is "old rt 611" and "new rt 611" and they overlap in places. You were probably rerouted on "new route 611". In this area, it is getting built up quite a bit, like Route 46 in NJ, if you have been there. Lots of chain stores, lots of traffic.
You can probably still follow the "scenic" route, plenty of twists and turns. If you have an old map, compare it with a new one. The roads are still here, but called different names. I am new to the area, so I am not sure what it was like 20 years ago.
The most beautiful part is along the river. You can always take the Delaware Water Gap exit and pull into the diner. All of the local old timers hang out there. They know all of the good places. If you don't feel like driving, you can take the "trolley" There are buses decorated to look like trolleys that drive around the scenic route and give a tour.
