First year if they bloom at 7-9 months I will look at the plant and see if I want to keep it another year. Hopefully it will rebloom and I will get an idea of the scape and such but if not then if I like the bloom enough and it sets pods I will keep it another year. So many do get composted the first year if they don't do anything special around here and we may end up throwing out some good ones but we just don't have enough room to keep too many seedlings for 2 years. I did keep a bunch from last year that did not bloom but that was because I didn't have that many bloom to begin with. It seems that something always comes up and when it is transplanting time I seem to be so far behind and don't get things planted by our deadline to get first year blooms.
Kim and I try and limit the number of seeds we plant to about 1500 - 2000 together but with 3 of us hybridizing here and the garden owner doing probably 2000-3000 himself we just do not have room for many 2nd year unbloomed seedlings.
So if they make it past the first year then we watch and see what they will do.
