I was at a garden center today and made sure to look at the different Hibiscus leaves. The leaves of the hybrid 'Fireball' looked very similar so I'm thinking your plant is an interspecific hybrid with Hibiscus coccineus in the bloodline. Hopefully it will show some buds soon.
