Being you are new to daylilies experiment some to find out what actually does best where you are and in your own garden. Some of the plants will have several fans some maybe only one, but try a few in pots and a few in the ground. The amount of rain you get in your area, or the availability you have to watering your plants will have a lot to do with it. We normally go though a drought period during the summer and I try to avoid transplanting during August and September, not saying you actually couldn't do it then.
The plants I personally received from wilds were very small, but had an excellent root system so I think you would be alright doing it either in the ground or in pots, but a little of each might be a good learning experience. Just keep in mind that plants in the heat of summer that are in pots will have to be very closely monitored and watered normally at least once a day, those in the ground after a week or two could maybe get by with twice a week watering during dry spells.
