I got a deal on some blueberry bushes last fall, and thought 'what the heck, they're a buck each '. They are Southern Highbush, low chill varieties bred for this area. I have a big raised bed that I figured I might be able to acidify the soil enough to make them happy in it. Well . . .

One tiny bush had a couple of clusters of berries a month ago. Of course I had to leave town for the birth of my granddaughter so I missed them ripening and being enjoyed by the birds. A few of the others are showing growth, but some are just sitting there looking unhappy, and one was dug up and dragged away by some critter - I found it dead and dessicated about 40ft away from the bed. Shrug!

I bought some little pop-up cages to try and protect the berries, maybe next year I'll actually get to use them, and taste a Florida-grown blueberry. Growing up in the Pac. NW they were my very favorite fruit.
