The reason almost all modern websites give you a calendar to click on for dates is because you can't rely on people to enter a properly formatted date in a text field. It has to be entered correctly or there will be errors and nothing is more error prone than date entering. Is it YYYY-MM-DD or MM/DD/YY or MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY or something else? So you use a drop down calendar and that way it works 100% of the time.
