I am late to the conversation. I am sorry you are having animal problems. I feel your pain. I have deer, rabbit and groundhogs. I love Hostas and I moved to a property that is over run with animals. I am fighting them constantly.

This Hosta was 5 ft wide and 4 ft tall. In one night it was gone except for the stems.

I moved it from my old house and needed a dolly to move.

This is what it looked like the next morning after I planted it.

If you get another Hosta and plant it in a pot. The soil breaks down and every year you need to lift the Hosta and add more soil to the bottom to lift the Hosta. If you put the soil on top it will die because they cannot be to far under soil.
