This project evolved over a period of three summers and solved several problems. My house is on a well-traveled corner, and I have no real back yard. So I have virtually no privacy. Also, I could not see either the border I installed along the alley, or the corner rock garden, from my house. So the first summer I installed a border along the top side of the corner rock garden, and at the end of the summer I decided to install an island bed using the “lasagna” method. It worked slick as a whistle. The next summer I installed a second island bed, also using the “lasagna” method. I now had a little area where I could sit, so I purchased some lawn furniture. The third year I decided to connect the two island beds, add a mulch path and seating area. I wanted this to be a very calm and restful area, so I relied more heavily on foliage than flowers. Here are the photos of what I think of as my secret garden:

Old gardeners never die. They are just pruned and repotted.
