I saw a fox once, and was impressed by how graceful it seemed. If a dog was like a linebacker, this was like a ballerina.

A friend and I were out hiking at night, in the middle of a large open field. We saw the fox flitting from tree to tree just behind the treeline around the open field. We were impressed and turned to follow it and it saw our interest, so it disappeared.

We kept peering and pointing and walking that way, hoping to catch another glimpse. I don't know if it was curious or just showing off who knew their way around in the woods, and who were stumbling dummies, but the fox circled all the way around the field and snuck up behind us, getting 1/2 way across the bare and totally exposed field while we stared in the opposite direction "hoping to catch a glimpse".

It disappeared again in about as much time as it took us to turn the rest of the way around.

It must have been thinking "Tag! You're IT!" as it whirled away.
