Love your photos, it makes me think of the childrens book Secret Garden. I guess the idea of a garden gone natural that you go out and tease into shape. That's my style of gardening especially this timeofyear after going on vacation and returning, I just realized that my salpiglossis totally disappeared...I guess it didn't like my zones intense sun, the seedlings never got over 3 inches tall, maybe I should try again in more shaded area.

Definitely my style this year. nodding

When you do try the salpiglossis again, shade the bottom half of the planting area, if you can. I had trials going in several different areas this year, and the only ones that did really well were the ones with the logs piled around them. They were planted on a slight slope in clay with just the sod layer removed and a bit of compost added. Half-day, intense sun seems to be okay as long as the root zone doesn't get too hot. I didn't feed this batch any appreciable amounts of extra nitrogen either, it just received whatever washed down from the bed above it. Aphids will finish off any plants that aren't happy, unless they're sprayed off with water daily. Rolling my eyes. The one plant that did receive this extra attention still isn't bouncing back to a pretty form, but it is still alive and blooming a little bit.
