It turns out that what I had in my yard today was not a Painted Lady but an American Lady! A friend alerted me. Then, I found this nifty page for comparing the 2:

Then looked more closely at my Lady:

Clear as a bell there you can see the little white dot and the eyespots distinguishing American from Painted Lady! Very cool to learn about this today.
