Update: both hens are tending the chicks together, spending most of the time out in the chicken yard, teaching them how to forage. The chicks respond well to either mom, they kind of run a tag-team warning off the other curious hens, and they huddle up side by side at night with the chicks tucked under them. Seems to be working well. The chicks are a week old and starting to feather out.
