I'd think that is the right approach Oldgardener. I don't know of a way to safely disinfect a small start of bacterial rot (if that's the cause). If you can just provide heat and humidity and deal with the cool nights the plants natural robustness should do the rest. Shipping it to CA or FL for rehab would be ideal of course.
