Thanks, I love Twizzlers too! I think the criteria most hybridizers are using are pest and disease resistance, heat tolerance, the ability of the blooms to stay double, triple, single i.e. the same color, shape etc. For example some doubles will convert to singles or visa versa over time. Fragrance is good. The plant should root well so it can be propagated. If the plant is a variegate, one would make sure that the trait would carry on in the cuttings. Most test them for 2 years, some insist on longer.
