Ok, knowing you are located in central Illinois should really help and knowing that the plants will not be planted until September should also be a factor in determining how much protection your plants need.
Being down here in S.E. Alabama I am not much help with your question, but I am sure there are members here from that area that will respond. The September planting date sounds perfect, wish you the best with the new plants.
