A suggestion, pick up a couple of the plastic bins with tight fitting lids that are available at most big box stores and dollar stores. Use one of them for soil and the other to store your fertilizer, tools, pots etc. They can be spray painted with the Krylon type paints for plastic to match/blend in with your decor,. Use them to set plants on by windows. Most of the bins have slightly recessed lids, so a small bit of water spilling won't damage the floor..
