Actually, I committed the mortal sin of putting weeds into my compost that had some seeds.
(Small, cold pile.) Then I used the compost as top-dressing over some lettuce seeds.

It's true - that guarantees a huge number of weeds.

Sometimes when "everyone knows something", it IS true.

SIGH.
