I don't know if you've seen Magic Lantern (magiclantern.fm) but that looks pretty neat and seems stable. I'd try it if I owned a Canon. One of its many, many features is the ability to see the shutter count.

Also, eoscount.com will read the shutter count data from your camera that's connected to the computer (tho I'm no fan of IE/ActiveX...but people in photography forums seem to trust the site).
