Nothing is added. The styrofoam is "carved" with knife, cement trowel, wire brush or whatever you like. I prefer a corner paint scraper, and a wire brush for final surfacing. I usually try to accentuate the depressions by blending darker colors in them. You will find that the heat gun will also create interesting textures. You might want to practice on a plain styrofoam piece first.
