The basic soil is a mix of bagged humus, mulch called hardwood fines, and some sandy potting soil. The sand visible in the picture is playground sand which I covered all my peonies with about an inch deep last fall. I used the sand for physical protection over Winter then brushed it away in the Spring. One of the side benefits of the sand is less weeds and grass around the clump.
