Good question,
@wind. The answer is that on our previous site, we really let it go in whatever direction it wanted to go and that meant it really went in every direction. It became a site that wasn't really centered around gardening. And that was fine for what that was but when we made ATP we made a conscious decision that it would be dedicated exclusively to gardening and that has worked out well.
Also, our sister site Cubits.org is available for all the other non-gardening stuff and that has worked out extremely well. A lot of people who are ATP members also spend time in the Pets cubit or the cooking cubits, etc. Some of those cubits even can do their own photo contests for pets and so-forth!
