I have also seen the "sand look" in soils near the bottom or even in the tray.
I always thought it was some sort of castings--like worms leave--either from an ant
infestation or some other critter that has taken up a residence in your pot.
Have you ever noticed ants or some other bugs in your pot?
It could be almost anything-but the fact that the soil looks like dry sand is most likely
some form of "castings". The mystery is from WHAT??? Could try Google?
