Terra cotta colored plastic pots never do that. Green, lasts 2 years. I'm thinking the lighter colors are made from another product, who knows? They cost the same.
I don't think it's the light color, just the particular pots... I've had light-colored ones that lasted and lasted, and then a few years ago bought some big square pots, had them out for the one summer and when I went to move them in the fall they completely broke apart. They weren't particularly cheap pots, either -- really ticked me off! In contrast, I have white self-watering flower boxes from Gardener's Supply that I've hung on the south side of my house (on the deck railing) where the sun is as brutal that it gets up here, and they have lasted at least 8 years.
