Oh yes...I love my sandy soil too (even if it means I have to irrigate more often!) ...and yes the pests complicate things...but it's soooo worth the hassle when the irises bloom in spring!
Another positive note is that when I was out there I noticed that Daughter Of Stars has 2, going on 3, stalks getting ready to bloom!
