Bonnie, from what I've read about them, the hot dry environment shouldn't bother them. I'm doing the same thing, just tried 10 bulbs this year and if they prosper I'll add more- how awesome to harvest our own saffron! It's typical for many hybrid tulips to behave as annuals, but there are some that are known to provide repeat performances.
