I would suggest to get a feel for how heavy 'well watered' is, then keep the plants nearly dry, light weight but not nearly dusty dry. It's really easy to spread your fingers on the soil and turn the pot upside down to get the plant out of the pot for a quick root check. I find I'm doing this quite often. Doesn't hurt anything.
Oh, if the plants aren't rootbound, they will need less watering.
