We are new to All Things Plants so I hope this question is not out of place here. My husband and I are in our 11 month DIY Aquaponics system (7 months of operations). We live in Oklahoma and are now in the deep freeze. We have a greenhouse that will be 34 ft long, but only got 19 ft done before this winter freeze came, it is early seems like. We closed off the west end of greenhouse with very good construction insulation. We have heaters and have used this same insulation to wrap both fish tanks and all three grow beds. It was really cold last night, but tonight will really be cold in the minus digits. We will be doing Dutch buckets next, the goldfish tank will support this system. In the Dutch buckets we would like to have some great bearing peach trees, apple trees, etc. One great thing about aquaponics things grow twice as fast and we have had great results. Now do not get me wrong, we have had problems too. but have been either lucky or smarter than we give ourselves credit for. lol Want to wait till february or so to get some trees going.
Starting with small trees and getting them grown up to producing size will be a blast. The small trees should be much cheaper and, since we are retired but still raising grandkids, inexpensive is very important. We may or may not keep them in the system. We will be experimenting, for instance, start three peach trees. One stays in the aquaponics system in the green house, one gets planted just outside the greenhouse at the correct root growth and stills get fish water and maybe last the third gets planted out in the field to fin for itself. My question is this, dwarf trees vs. regular trees. My grandfather, from Corn, Oklahoma on Cob Creek, grafted an apple tree that had red, granny and green apples. Oh I miss him. Maybe I am getting off subject..... Dwarf vs regular and/or whatever is new these days for peaches and apples. I would like suggestions on names of trees and opinions on production, disease, and maybe a place to purchase small ones. I purchased a peach tree for $50 here in Oklahoma City last year and it was doing so well. We had 3 small peaches on it, before one of the many tornado's last summer twisted it up like a pretzel.
