Not really a bad gift per se, just a bad marketing ploy. If recipient is resourceful enough to learn about the plant, it can be grown that way and not merely using it as a christmas decor. I grow some of my tilly's in a glass hanging outdoors. It loves the set-up, and I got many pups already.

Unfortunately, to the untrained/ unknowledgeable recipient..they will just treat it as a throw away gift...and that really makes it bad.
