We use 'L' for my plnt; John starts with the numeral. We decided against 'J' as a not needed designation. My sys tem is followd by the year'14' followed by the cross 'A' or in this case 'AM' meaning MTB, followed by the plant # '1'. So the first blooming from the cross: L14-AM-1.
Every hybridizer uses a system which works for them.
