It doesn't have to be seed starting medium but needs to be soil with adequate drainage. Some of the African violet soil I've had experience with has been very heavy but perhaps yours is better quality. I would guess if you kept it warm, moist but not wet, under lights even with soil that is not perfect that it will still root up. No guaranty, but it's always worth a shot. Smiling
