Mulching well helps with that too. But I do find that our summer heat here is pretty intense sometimes and dries up lots of thing by later afternoon, most things like a little relief that time of day. Say between 3 and 6pm. When I was in OK the wind was SO hot it dried up everything in no time. Practically impossible to grow a thing there, I think even the weeds struggled...
