Linn and Ursula (and all) - I skimmed through photos doing a search of white blooming epis and thought it might be Epiphyllum hookeri, but I did NOT remember that name as one I had received. When Ursula said "Strictum", I immediately remembered that name and said THAT'S IT!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! It was bothering me something awful that I remembered the few cultivars I had received except THAT one plant. Whew.... I was hoping someone here would mention a name that would ring a bell for me. Thanks for your help in IDing this epi for me!!!!
I have several oxypetalum, so I knew it wasn't that one. And I will concur that the scent of oxypetalum is one of the most intoxicating flower scents I have ever smelled in my life. BUT .... the scent is only present at the height of it's bloom which for me is right around midnight during that single night. Before and after that time .... the scent is not there. My guess is that detectable scent is when the bloom is most fertile and the scent may attract the pollinators. The blooms on Epiphyllum hookeri are too high in the air hanging from my large arbor/pergola for me to smell and it usually blooms at the same time as oxypetalum so I can not distinguish a scent of that cultivar/species. I might have to stand on a chair and cut one of the blooms off to smell it to see if it too is scented. I love these plants! It is an EVENT when they have their bloom flushes several times a year!
Thanks for the correct ID!!!! I really appreciate it!
