All astrantia do not have vegetative stems, only stems with minimal foliage and then flowers. In other words, nearly every leaf originates from the base. In addition, astrantia leaves are palmately divided and have round, unwinged leaf stems (petioles) that are much longer than the leaf. The plant in question exhibits none of these features.
