I never plan on paper. I just collect plants I desire. When it comes time to plant I make sure I know the reported height and spread of each one. Then I physically lay them out. Rearranging until I am satisfied. Often running to another bed to dig something up I think will look good with my selections.
I realize I do things backwards! But I never let not having a space for something stop me
So every summer I end up with a large collection that I scramble to fit in by end of season.
