Three terms that pop into my head when thinking Daylily and the letter "D" are Dormant, Doorakian and Deselect.

One thing I look forward to seeing in the spring is the beginning of growth from the Dormants.

George Doorakian is the hybridizer of Emerald Starburst and Rose F. Kennedy, two of the most talked about daylilies right now. The distinctive huge green throats that cover most of the petals are distinctive and extremely popular with growers and hybridizers who are wanting to work with them.

Deselect, that dreaded term hybridizers have to face as they decide which seedlings stay and which seedlings get composted.
I remember the first few years deselecting, it was so hard! I wanted to keep them all...actually I still have one sdlg from my first crop. The sdlg is not worth introducing with only 7 - 8 buds, top branching and has produced nothing better than itself, but I love the blooms. The sdlg is now a huge clump...I keep forgetting to divide it ... which does make up for the lack of budcount with the many scapes it produces each year.
