I have a Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Brunfelsia pauciflora) that's been in the same container for four or more years and it's looking pretty ratty; totally root-bound; I know it would do better in ground but have been so lazy about finding a place to plant it. I've seen some beautiful specimens in gardens here in Florida and I've heard a few folks say that it is a very finicky plant.
