I grow over 50 cyms (minis, teacup, and Chinese). At first, I never know which it might, a spike or new growth. At a certain point, I check to see if they are flat or cylindrical as Ursula said. Sometimes the buds get trapped in sheaths and I have to carefully free them. Staring throughout is a good idea!
