I did manage to find an Italian garden nursery in Sorrento, and cornered the poor shopkeeper right at closing time to ask about the Italian name of the red wildflower I was seeing everywhere. She spoke no English, I speak only very limited tourist Italian, but we got there eventually--"il papavero", the poppy.

Here I am on my way to the flowering plant section.
