The trouble with stuff that just drives the ants away instead of killing them is that they often will split up and form new nests, so where you had only one mound before, you will find two or three new mounds somewhere else in a month or two. It's called 'budding' and they actually elect a new queen for each new nest and make lots more fire ants.
Fire ants are not native in most places in the US. I am opposed to outright killing most insects but fire ants? They need to die! The ant baits like Amdro that work well on them do not poison any other insects or animals, so as long as you're using a specific bait, not using toxic sprays and blanket insecticides to nuke your whole yard, it's a pretty good way to get rid of just one targeted insect.
