Homepage pictures aren't static, they change as new images are added to the database. They are database image entries that are simply showcased briefly on the homepage.
If you click on the database picture that you want to delete, and then scroll down toward the bottom of the page there will be a "ยป Propose this image be deleted" link - click on that and follow the prompts.
