I like to use a sweet bait for the little sugar ants. Terro, or any of the other sweet baits work great, and again, are collected by the ants, take the bait back to the queen and really kill the whole nest. You can't be sure that you kill the queen when you treat a mound or any ant nest with Orthene. You may just be killing the workers and they will move. With a bait, you know for sure the whole nest is kaput when you watch it for a minute and see no more ants.

Our extension entomologist used to recommend diluting the sweet bait by at least half, as well, so it's very economical. It doesn't work for fire ants though, sadly.
