Firefox 36.0.1 NoScript AddOn w/ATP allowed
In the category control panel, I added a new category, selected private, and clicked on add the category.
The new category appeared in the list.
I went to my user images page in a new tab and added a plant to the new category--clicked add plant, got the dialog box that says Plant added! and asks me to chose to either access my plant list or close the box. I closed the box. I refreshed my images page and the plant showed as in my list. I then added a few more plants the exact same way to some of the old categories.
When I checked to see what can be seen by all, all of the plants that I had just added were visible, and none of the plants that I had successfully edited to be invisible earlier in the day could be seen.

@dirtdorphins...i've not returned to my plant list to continue work on it so this is the little bit that i think i know now.

To begin with, In the category panel, you first need to go to the "Edit" function (pencil and paper) on the right of the screen, click on edit, then add a category, select the option Private view and save your changes. If you use the "edit" function to create a category first, select private, then save changes then all the plants you add to that category should be only viewable to you. You don't need Firefox...just leave it alone.
