We do get the occasional high winds on the west coast,..i think the last was in 2012,..here in the midlands its more rare,..Scotland and England get it worse than Ireland,..as for protecting the garden against high winds its not something i work on as there are high walls either side of my garden and very high at the end however this time the wind came through two six foot gaps,..it sounded like a jet plane flying very low,..as mentioned this time the winds did me a favor lol.
