A spading fork works well to lift a clump. Then side rhizomes can be taken off and remaining clump placed back in original position, or lift with fork and start breaking apart completely.

My worst clump was in a "rescue" where a clump was planted in a small area surrounded by walkways so the rhizomes grew on top of each other for around 7 years. That one needed a knife to separate, but most survived.
