Captain murano was my very favorite calla to date, mine was a freak tho! I think some pics made it to the database... They're very wimpy...

Your description " soft and crumbly" concerns me, the only time I'd use those words to describe an elephant ear, caladium or calla, when they are rotten, aroids can rot from the bottom up, and the growth tip will still survive...
Don't over dry or cook them in the sun, but if they're a bit funky, you don't want to overwater them
